Road Angels

Sometimes you can feel it when they’re near. People you just connect with. 2 months in and I wanted to tell you about some of these people that have me believing someone is watching over me.

Meet F. He was the first. F. is one of those travel bloggers whose sites have helped my research and planning. Turns out, he has family at the Jersey shore, and by ‘pure’ co-incidence, he was in town same time I was. So we met. I was able to pick his brain and learn so much.

Meet M. Standing room only on an Italian train I am making small chat, Hello, do you speak English? Where are you from, what have you seen in Italy? On one of these occasions, I could feel someone watching me but you know when you don’t want to turn and see? Finally, I look behind me and get a big smile from a young man, I smile back and say, do you speak English? He nods and introduces himself as a university student and he would be happy to show me his city and help me practice Italian. I did not have concrete plans to go to this particular city, but we exchanged digits. OMG did I just write that? A week later, 10pm he messages me and asks how I was doing, and where I was off to next? Genoa, ..tomorrow.. I text back. He then tells me you cannot go there because of the flash floods and people have even died. OK, a little panic mode because it is 10 at night and I have to re-arrange the plans and find a hotel fast. This is how I ended up in Bologna. So we met. I got a local’s tour of that great city, food & culture…twice. We shared stories and had lots of laughs, but something he said has really struck a chord. “Trust people again Debbie”, he said.

Meet V. V was one of my hosts. I was at her backyard picnic table updating computer stuff, when V., Prosecco bottle in hand, asked if she could join me, and, did I mind if her BFF came over for a drink. So we met. These 2 Venetian beauties and I drank way too much, stayed up way too late, talked about boys and laughed and giggled for hours. Something V. said has stayed with me. When I told her I was getting the evil eyes from some Ital women the day I wore flip flops, she reminded me, who gives a shit? Stay true Debbie and wear flip flops whenever you want.

Meet F&A. 2 friends from Bologna who went above and beyond to make sure the Italian medical system helped me finish the vaccinations I needed. A. actually showed up at this one clinic where I was getting the run around, took me by the arm, and made me follow him. He was so pissed off and started kinda shouting to the workers (in Italian of course), I left there with appointment I needed. However, to make it happen, he offered his friend, F. to drive me 45 minutes out of the city! Unreal, right?

Meet R. This one’s personal, so let’s just say R. helped me remember that I am a girl. And this one, opened up my mind, again, to times long ago, with a big fat smile on my face. I speak often with him, still.

Then there’s ‘The English’, the 2 fun ladies on the cruise; M. also travelling alone on the cruise ended up in my muster station by coincidence? And, Vince & Sue from NJ who took me out for a great dinner in Bologna;  Aquesta, the beautician who re-blonded my highlights, and D. the other female traveler I met in a café in Varenna, who too, was dining alone, we still keep in touch.

Trust people again, you bet.
